Welcome to the Era-of-Milk-Tea!

According to iiMedia Research, the number of existing beverage outlets in China has exceeded 450 THOUSAND in 2018.

The size of this new Chinese-style tea market in 2018 is over 90 BILLION yuan (WOOOOW).

Meituan, one of China's most popular online-delivery service companies, delivered 2.1 HUNDRED MILLION orders all over the country in 2018.

As milk tea culture is flourishing, more query regarding "whether milk tea is healthy" has been raised among nutritionists.

In 2017, Shanghai Consumers Council conducted comparative tests on milk tea ingredients among several popular beverage shops in Shanghai.

Researchers picked 1 kind of milk tea from each brand and tested them out.

Let's take a look at what have been found out!

How much sugar do you think is added in ONE serving of milk tea? [1 cube sugar = 4g]

100% Sugar

0% Sugar

Clear

The Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents (2016) suggests a daily sugar intake of 25~50g per person.

However, most tested beverages with regular (100%) sugar exceeded the recommended daily intake.

Meituan's 2018 Milk Tea Consumption Resport finds out that most customers choose "no-sugar" option in their beverage

whereas only 7% choose the option of "regular (100%) sugar."

More surprisingly, there is still quite a lot of sugar in our drinks even though we choose the "no-sugar" option!

Caffeine is often found in beverages such as coffee and tea.

Recommended daily caffeine intake for a healthy aldult should not exceed 200mg.

Mlik tea tastes good -- but imagining caffeine from 1 milk tea = caffeine from 4 Redbulls (or even more) is... unbelievable...

Author's Notes: The result might seem suprising, but please do enjoy life and don't be too strict with yourself!

And of course... pick the healthier option if you can!
